I implemented a model based on the advices given above (attached below):
- quad dominant mesh,
- quadatric elements (line3, tri6, quad8)
- non-linear static analysis
- slowly load the shell surface, and then after start to play with the third corner…
There are different types of sails:
- main sail: fully attached to the mast. It is the type I'm interested in,
- jib: triangular one "attached" to a cable running from the top of the mast to the front of the boat,
- Spinnaker: big very flexible sail…
Thanks a lot for all the explanations and the tip for creating line elements on shell edges. I will try this evening (end of leaves today, so now back to normal work).
I will also try to work with quad dominant meshes of quadratic elements.
As th…
Hi, thanks a lot for the feedbacks, and hints.
As I run the free version of the software, as hobbyist, I can' solve the models from prop-design. So I will try redo it within the 1000 nodes limit.
As my testing of the mast alone did not, with line2…
Thanks a lot cwharpe for the indication. It was under my nose, but I had not seen it. True that it was written (I'm using v16), but was only looking at categories I had alread used in previous simulations.
I can now move forward with those indicati…
Thanks a lot Victor for the expalantion and the tip. I understand now and you show how to proceed. It works.
Thanks a lot for letting people like me use use a powerful tool as Mecway to learn and discover. If I can, I vould be happy to play with yo…
Understood, thanks for the explanation. This can be the issue with Opensource efforts. More perspectives, less coordination, less consistency...
I try tyo find my way between the different wokbench and determine something that works for me. But it …
Hello,
I'm all but an expert here, as hobbyist. I did my basic CAD learning on Fusion360, but the constant evolution of the hobbyist plans turned me to FreeCAD, which I had discarded at the beginning. At the end, even if not as consistent as Fusion…
Thank you Victor for those indications. They are helpful to better understand what is to be looked at. I will explore the options you propose.
In the simple cases I tried to work on, I had the feeling that I was not in above cases:
- constraining a…
They do it for modern sail design (bigger yacht or olympics) :-)
I will re-read the calculix golden rules. Do you have one especially in mind ?
Windsurfer sails are pretty optimized now, But some experts worked on models and simulation to optimize…
Hello Disla,
Thanks a lot for taking the time to answer. I agree with all your points. I already played with the mast simulation to have the "skeleton" OK.
The issue is with the sail. And this is clearly my point here. If I don't understand the w…
Hello,
Disla pointed me this thread some time ago to share some directions to simulate sails. I played with the proposed examples and it is encouraging. But this definitively looks like not trivial FEA use cases, often on the verge of convergence i…
