  • Also the ability to handle laminates like carbon fiber layups. I know this might be a reach but it would be great to have.
  • Another help would be to be able to import a step file with multiple bodies (assembly) and have each of those bodies created in the Mecway design tree. As it is I have to import many individual files each with only one body.
  • Thank you both for the suggestions. I will fire up python and check out the sectionproperties package and see how it does with the dxf import. Thanks again.
  • It would be nice to be able to add labels to the computed solutions so it can be easily seen what they refer to. See below.
  • It has been a very valuable tool to have in the arsenal. Thank you Victor.
  • John, Thank you for the example that was very helpful! I was unaware of the pre-tension feature and the elastic coupling trick will come in handy. Thank you again for your help. Tim
  • In this case what I am looking for is the pressure distribution at the contact surface when a screw is tightened to a specific torque. So I don't think a displacement would work. If you can make it work that way let me know.
  • Apparently the nodal constraints are not sufficient for some reason. Using symmetry I reduced the model to 1/4 of the part and used frictionless supports for constraints, and it ran fine in V20, and I assume it will run find in V23 as well.
  • Hi Victor, Thank you for the link. 1) The bar in the model is already constrained in Z and Y with the nodal constraints shown below. 2) 18GPa is a typo that was not present in my previous more complex simulation attempts. It should be 18MPa, but…
  • Thank you for your help. Looks like it eventually did load. Mecway is using about 44GB for the data. I was able to successfully analyze the results. Saved the file off in Mecway and the .liml file is about 69GB.
  • I am not familiar with the .frd format, but other than my time variant load, there is nothing extraordinary. BTW it has been running for an hour plus and shows no sign of getting out of the state it is "stuck" in. I will let it continue to run, but…
  • I looks like the issue was with Mecway opening and saving the file. There is a 57.9GB .frd file in the temporary directory. When I try to open it with Mecway I see something very similar to what I saw when Mecway was trying to open/save the file. …
  • I ran the simulation with saving just at the last 1/3 of the simulation using the method I originally described. It ran to completion, but then locked up when saving the data to disk. I let it run for a several days and it still didn't finish savi…
  • I was wondering if there was any chance that MECWAY running in Ubuntu/Wine could evoke CalculiX running in the Ubuntu OS (not under Wine). And if it can't do that is there a computational penalty running CalculiX in Wine rather than in the native U…
  • Excellent, thank you. I tried non linear dynamic using a ccx CENTRIF card and it seemed to work. I also verified that MECWAY centrifugal load appears to work (even though it is red). That makes things easy as far as configuration goes.
  • Well looks like I asked a similar question a couple years ago. I am investigating that answer. Sorry for the redundancy. Still would appreciate any documentation on applying a time variant load in dynamic non-linear 3D
  • Yes it is significantly faster - one nice feature is that you can specify the number of threads it uses. That should speed things up provided they get run on different cores.
  • WOW!!! I had split my complex part in half (with a 3D cutting surface) trying to get parts that would mesh and that I could reassemble with bonds later. After many hours of trying I got one half of the part to mesh, the other half refused no matter…
  • @prop_design, when I go to install the new netgen tools it tells me I need to uninstall my current installation. Not sure if this is refering to a previous installation I had installed in the past or the Mecway installation. Will I blow up the Mec…
  • @prop_design thanks for the tip on the topology doctor. I have seen others refer to that as well. Downloading it now. I will give it a whirl. Do you happen to design aircraft props and rotors? We have a 9' diameter carbon composite rotor for a…
  • After removing some very small faces on the STEP model it appears to now mesh as a solid. The file I started with was a STEP file with a lot of complexity that I imported from one of our manufactures. It came in with a lot of errors. I cleaned up…
  • I have done a number of export and imports out of and into various CAD programs to verify the STEP is a solid. It still meshes only the surfaces though. Any suggestions as to how to proceed would be appreciated.
  • It looks like MECWAY/GMSH may think the STEP file is a surface file not a solid body. It is a solid body in Solidworks when I export it, but it looks like when it exports to step there may be a couple faces that don't get written properly - even th…
  • @Sebastianmaklary thanks for the confirmation. And I find some small comfort in the fact that others have battled with SolidQuirks... frustrating for sure. From now on I export with the "split periodic faces" checked. Only cost me 3 hours of messi…
  • The original geometry is solid. And as you can see from the mesh it meshes solid as well. The STEP should be solid as well. I think splitting the periodic faces when exporting (or perhaps one of the other options checked above) got it to import in…
  • @JohnM well that explains it! Might be a good data point for Victor as he digs into this. I was finally able to get something working by changing the export options on Solidworks. If I check all the boxes shown below it looks like I can read it i…
  • @JohnM created a new liml in MW14 and loaded the STEP. Same result. Really curious how yours could be different. The only think I can figure is the mesher.
  • @JohnM Thanks for looking into that. Strange that it worked for you. Try as I might it is messed up. What meshing tool were you using? Could you post your liml file so I can try and replicate on my end?
  • I tried a large number of different import and export options with various CAD tools. Most of the paths ended with a part that imported and looked like this. The part does mesh but the top face (the dark one) does not map from the model to the mes…
  • I exported from SW in an ACIS format. I imported/exported to STEP with both Freecad and SW and in all cases it was still whacked. Can't seem to get a model I can read with this part. I am going to try parasolid and then quit if that doesn't work.
