Importing 2d drawing

Is it possible to import a 2d drawing, of for example a pressure vessel, then create a mesh from it. I have tried to do this with no success.

  • Yes. You can open a .dxf file and mesh it with Mesh tools -> Automesh 2D.

If the meshing fails, it can be because it's not really the closed boundary of a shape(s). It can also be a bug in the mesher which happens with some shapes and the automatic element size - if it's making random/faulty meshes, specify a max. element size.

  • attached is a picture of a sample .dxf I tried uploading. When I upload it, Mecway only recognizes the circle not the squares. One square is made from the line tool and the other is made from the square tool in Inventor.
  • Oh, many shapes aren't supported. Mecway can currently only read:

    POINT
    LINE
    LWPOLYLINE
    CIRCLE
    ELLIPSE
    ARC
    3DFACE
    INSERT
    BLOCK

You should be able to make most shapes using LWPOLYLINE (lightweight polyline). It looks like both rectangles here are made from POLYLINE though.
  • You can import dxf into 3D cad and built 3 surfaces. After that you save as step or iges
