Beginner Question - US units error

I've used LISA in the past and wanted to take a look at Mecway.

I tried making a simply supported concrete beam (12 in x 12 in x 12 ft) and applied a gravity constraint (-32.2 ft /s^2). This should return a total reaction force of about 1800 lbf (12 ft^3 beam @ 150 pcf).

Mecway is returning a reaction sum of over 57000 lbf...which just doesn't seem right.

I tried setting the gravity to -1 ft / s^2 and that seemed to correct the reaction force, but the displacements were WAY off.

Am I doing something wrong? (LIML file attached)

Thanks!

  • Hello justhumm

The density is very high. 150 lb.s^2/ft^4 is 4820 lb/ft^3. Mecway doesn't currently have a lb/ft^3 unit so you would need to convert to one of the available units.

The displacements are excessive because there are insufficient constraints for static equilibrium. It should have at least 3 points of support but has only 2.
  • Late reply but the website https://msgfile.info/fea-units.html is very helpful for consistent units and conversions to the chosen set of units.
