Max shear stress on shell eles

Just trying to understand why Mecway can calculate Von mises equivalent stress in shell eles but not Max shear stress x 2 ?
Also might it make sense for such calculations to optionally consider surface pressures as the 3rd principal stress (-P at applied face, -0.5P at midplane, 0 at outer face) ?

  • No particular reason, it's just not there. Perhaps nobody asked for it. Though you could create it yourself from the stress in element coordinates components using Solution -> New formula.

Interesting idea about using pressure as out-of-plane stress. Though it might improve the result, I'd be worried about implications and if it could increase error in some cases.
  • Thanks Victor, noted about the formula. I was wondering if there was any more to it as Mecway shows a 'whats wrong' prompt for MSSx2 on shells and it says some fields are missing from results. Please add this in the next version. The thing about the pressure could be an option or labs extra.
  • Hmm, that error message on maximum shear stress x 2 is a bit odd. But it only works for solid elements.
