Joining shell and solid elements

edited January 2015
Is there anything I should be particularly aware of when joining solid elements and shell elements? Is it as simple as just merging the nodes at the interface between the two elements? Thanks.

  • You can simply merge the nodes, yes. That will create a hinge joint because an individual node of a solid element can't transmit moments.

If you want a stiff joint, for now, you have to connect the shell across several nodes so that together they prevent free rotation.
