Curves & quadratic elements

Quick multi-part question please, Victor...

1. Do quadratic edges only adopt a true curve by using the curve generator?
2. Does the midpoint node have to be at the midpoint for a) straight edges b) curved edges?

Cheers,

D

  • 1. The edge of a quadratic element is always a parabola or a straight line. To make multiple elements fit that curve, you could use the curve generator or start with a single non-straight element and refine it multiple times which preserves the quadratic curve.

    2) No and no. Though being further away might increase the error and if it's too far, it will fail with a topology error. You can get a sense of what the "true" edge shape looks like by putting a line3 element along it as shown in the attachment. For performance reasons, this curve visualization only appears with a small number of elements in the model.
  • Nicely explained, got it. Thanks.
