Is it possible to develope a 3D all hexahedral local refimement for structured meshes? Something similar to 2D local refinement x3 but for 3D hex elements?
I don't plan to, no. I looked into hex 3-refinement when adding the x2 local refinement and it seemed like too much work for the value that it would provide.
You're not going to like this suggestion, but have you considered joining two non-conforming hex meshes with bonded contact?
