Overall Shear and Bending Moment
Sometimes it is needed to extract the overall shear and bending moment to check overturning stability, sliding resistance, anchorage, or slab design of a structure.
When the structure is under complex load patterns like Hydrodynamic pressures or wind loads, it’s not so easy to do it by hand and FEA may help.
I have found this trick useful and simply to apply. The location of the extraction point will depend on the design purpose.
I have check it against analytical solution for different load patterns and positions and there is a good agreement.
Attached example with a realistic wind pressure pattern around a cylinder.
