Contact issues

Hi There
I am trying to converge this problem with a wire wrapped around a drum, where the wire is axially loaded similar that of a winch drum. I want the contact between winch wire and the drum to see the actual load distribution and its corresponding and drum yield stresses. I can see from the partial conversion that there is issue with the contact, as i can see the the faces are not perfectly aligned for contact, how can i change the orientation of the plate normal, i have solid model. Is there any other advise, thanks for your help in advance.

  • Start from simple.
1 turn model to understand what is going on here and the physics behind the problem. Maybe you don’t need so many turns.
Pay attention to the key role of friction in this problem. Try to converge 1 turn first.

  • Cheers Disla, thats a good place to start.

I have just realized there would be a much easier way to do it.
Fix one end of the wire to the pipe and the other fixed in the space. Then rotate the pipe instead or pulling the wire.
In any case , work first with the simple model . The set up will be mostly the same and computation times will be lower before everything start to work properly.
I have tested without friction (wrong) and works.

  • Wawoo, Many Thanks disla, sorry for my belated response, i did not check my space. This is a great idea to get around to the problem i had, I can see the distribution of forces in the sling from first to the last. Much apprecaited.
