Openradioss contact with offset shells

Hi
I'm doing a simulation of forming a shape using the OpenRadioss solver. I'm using the OR solver as I had convergence issues with the CCX solver but the OR solver runs without issues.

I have noticed one thing now since the sheetmetal part being formed was made with a surface being on one face and not with the surface being the midplane. I used Mecways offset shell element but the contact is still defined based on the shell elements and not on the bottom and top surface of the shell elements when it is offset. The top part (red) has a gap to the part while the part penetrates into the bottom part (purple) but the shell element nodes are approximately half the thickness distanced from the tool surfaces.

  • Shell offset doesn't currently work with OpenRadioss. I'm not sure if OpenRadioss even has that capability? I see that Mecway allows you to define shell offset and doesn't give any error message. This is wrong and I'll make it clear that it won't work in the next version. Sorry about that.
  • No worries. The simulation seemed to run fine but I was just confused about why it kept warning that there were initial penetration in the contact assignment.
