Thermal transient analysis with moving parts

Hi all,
I am a bit stuck with a thermal analysis...

Is there a way to do a thermal transient analysis in Mecway with moving parts?
As an example, imagine a hot block of steel with a hole and a colder steel rod moving through the hole in the block at a constant speed. So energy is transferred from the block to the rod as it passes through the block.
I'm interested in the temperature distribution of block and rod over time and the energy required to sustain a constant temperature in the block.
The below image shows an example model.

convection & radiation

heat flow

contact

The only maybe possible but bad option I have come up with so far is the following:
1) do a thermal steady state with energy inputs (heat flow) and outputs (convection, radiation)

2) transfer temperatur from solution from 1) to a thermal transient and check if temperature is stable over time (60 min)

3) transfer temperatur from solution from 2) to a new thermal transient and move the nodes of the rod by an increment (eg. 50 mm) that the rod will move in the time period set in the analysis setting (30 sec). Change the faces for concevtion and radiation accordingly

4) repeat until there is no change in temperature field from one solution to the next, a moving steady state so to speak...

I have also thought about using heat flow to account for the energy removed from the block by the rod moving through it but I think that would be diffucult, too as the energy "lost" through concection & radiation would also increase as the temperature of the rod exiting the block rises over time...

I hope im missing something here and there is an easier way to do this...
Does anyone have an idea?
Thanks!

  • maybe I am on to something by moving the heat source (heat flux) using unittriangle function and not considering the block for now...

  • Hi

    Forced convection maybe?.
There are some examples in the forum and explained in the manual.

  • Hi, thanks for the hint, I'll have a Look at it.
  • The rod-side works quite nicely with moving loads now (heat flux, convection and radiation)

For the block I'll try the forced concetion / fluid network element.
