detecting compression as axial forces

Hi everyone, is there a trick to hint if the axial force value is compression? in some example of mine I'm wondering if a negative axial force on beam value means compression maybe I am fooling myself.

  • This is for beam analysis of course.
  • Yes, negative axial force means compressive stress as the neutral axis. Although, if there's thermal loading, the element might be lengthened (tensile strain) while having compressive force/stress.
  • thanks a lot Victor,
