Shear Center Calculation

Can anyone suggest a method for calculating shear center for an arbitrary section? I have Solidworks, but that only gives the section centroid (as far as I can tell). There are some $350+ tools to do the calculation, but I was hoping for something free or under $100. Is there a "simple" way to compute shear center using Mecway?

  • You could give it a try to this. It's free. Registration required. It's in French.

I haven't test this other but was recomended in the calculix forum some time ago.

    ☑ Shear section properties

    ☑ Shear centre (elastic method)

    ☑ Shear centre (Trefftz’s method)

    ☑ Shear areas (global axis)

    ☑ Shear areas (principal axis)

    Among many other properties
  • I have used the "sectionproperties" package. It works very well!!! Highly recommended, it can even read Rhino files if I remember correctly.
  • Thank you both for the suggestions. I will fire up python and check out the sectionproperties package and see how it does with the dxf import. Thanks again.
