i have a question about selecting faces, nodes etc
in reference to the attached pic, how would i select the inside of the holes?

    Hello Andrew

    Here are two ways:

    A) Since it's from a STEP file, it's better to apply loads directly to the surface there so you can remesh it without losing the selection. If the hole is made from 2 surfaces like in the 1st picture below, you'll have to do each one separately.

    1) Click on the file name under Geometry in the outline tree to display the geometry instead of the mesh
    2) Right click on the hole and add a load or constraint.

    B) You can also do it in the mesh view as shown in your post, but if you regenerate the mesh later, the selection will be lost:

    1) Turn off Show element surfaces so the mesh is transparent
    2) Go to Edit -> Circle selection
    3) Change to Select nodes mode with the 3 boxes in the top middle of the graphics area.
    4) Select all the nodes of the hole
    5) Change to Select faces mode and the faces that use those nodes will automatically become selected.
  • Victor,
Thats great thanks, using method A is the best for STEP files
but using method B, how would you select all 4 hole (holding down Ctrl??)
    Andrew
  • Yes, hold ctrl to do multiple selections of nodes, then change them all to faces in one hit.
  • Thanks victor
I will start aanother post on materials
  • Victor,
How would you handle this thread in case of a complex 3D surface mesh?
    Thanks,
  • Do not forget super useful "Edge detecting selection" at the end of the "Edit" menu.
I work 90% of times also with curved surfaces.
